Behind the Brand: LucyLovesThis
LucyLovesThis is a Brixton-based design studio, selling hand-drawn prints, greetings cards and gifts. Founder, Lucy Stephens, tells us how she went from a career in publishing to designing the alphabet of London — creating her dream job in the process.
WHO IS LUCY STEPHENS?
I live in South London with my husband and two-year-old son, Leo. We have spent the last four years doing up a dilapidated Edwardian house and are very much enjoying life without builders! I love reading, type and pretty stationery.
HOW DID LUCYLOVESTHIS BEGIN?
I worked as a book cover designer for many years, designing books for lots of different celebrities such as Kelly Osbourne, Mary Berry, Fearne Cotton, Gizzi Erskine and Holly Willoughby. I started LucyLovesThis as a hobby initially. I never dreamed that it would become my full-time job and certainly not a successful business.
I had spent years working on commercial briefs and wanted to go back to what I loved. Drawing. I was so used to working to a brief and didn’t really know how to do anything just for myself anymore, so I gave myself a personal project — setting up an Etsy shop.
A few blogs picked up some of my designs and then it all just went a bit mad. I’m now stocked by over 30 retail outlets and have sold prints all over the world!
WHERE DO YOU FIND YOUR INSPIRATION?
I love type, it pervades my work and I’m a little obsessed by it! As a book cover designer, I’ve been able to let my obsession flourish. When you look at my work, you’ll see the majority of my prints use type in one way or other whether to create a map or just focus on one letter.
London has also been a massive inspiration for me, especially my little pocket of it in Brixton. I love that you can always find something new London that you’ve never seen before. It’s constantly changing and evolving — it’s a city that keeps you on your toes! You never know what you’re going to find around the next corner.
I’m currently working on an alternative guide to London, featuring my London Letters, which will be published next spring by Quarto.
WHICH LONDON LETTER IS YOUR FAVOURITE?
My favourite London Letter will always be the B for Brixton. It was the first one I ever designed and has allowed me to create my dream job.
YOU’VE WORKED ON COMMISSIONS FOR SOME GREAT BRANDS, WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVOURITE BRIEF SO FAR?
I have just finished working on a new range for the British Library which will be available in their shops soon. I loved working on this project so much, as the brief was to create something dedicated to the Bloomsbury group. Having been a book designer for so many years I am book mad, so this was a dream commission for me.
WHAT CAN OUR VISITORS EXPECT TO FIND FROM YOU AT STYLIST LIVE?
