Insider tips from the Stylist Catwalk Winter 2017

Missed Stylist Live earlier this month? Or looking for one last blast of inspiration for your wardrobe for Winter 2017? No fear! There’s still time to nail the five hottest trends on the high street – as seen on the Stylist Catwalk supported by BaByliss.

Every winter the Stylist fashion team brings the FROW of Fashion Week to Stylist Live and this year was no exception. With all the glitz and glamour of a high-end fashion show blended with the affordability of the high street, visitors were treated to a visual masterclass in how to shop and style the key trends of the season. We took a moment backstage with the Stylist Fashion Team to get their insider tips for rocking the catwalk vibe.

Trend #1: The Colour Clash

Designers were not just using surprising colour combinations, but also unexpected colours on the designer catwalks for Autumn / Winter 2017. Imperial purple, neon coral and pea green all made an appearance. The key thing to consider when styling these pieces is a clean lined silhouette. Structured shapes work, as do more flowing pieces in feminine fabrics, but patterned fabric and other fussiness should be avoided to achieve a dynamic look.

Fashion team’s top tip: “Pair a subtle blush pink with more vibrant red, wear two bold colours in very minimal tailored shapes or use accessories to add an extra colour pop to your look.”

Trend #2: Suits You

Trouser suits rule this winter. Universally the cuts are clean and simple, but the use of colour, pattern and styling diverse. Stripes and floral patterns were in evidence on the Fashion Week runways along with bold all red looks and vibrant pink suits. From picking unexpected cuts to layering with more casual pieces, there are a plethora of ways to make this season’s tailoring your own.

Fashion team’s top tip: “Opt for an unexpected fabric like satin to give your suit an evening spin or make a floral suit modern by adding a simple logo t shirt.  A lightweight mac is the perfect addition to shoulder robe with your suit.”

Trend #3: Modern Eclectic

This diverse and exuberant trend is unexpected, upbeat and colourful. Inspired by the pervasive Gucci mood, it’s all about eclectic everything. Mixing fabrics like lurex and velvet, adding textured embroidery over print and styling evening looks for day. Accessories are key here – making use of scarves, lady like bags and embroidered or diamanté shoes to add an individual twist to every look.

Fashion team’s top tip: “Wear bold printed trousers with a diamanté encrusted cashmere jumper, layer a wrap dress over a striking lurex t shirt or opt for a checked coat that’s been elevated with bold pink embroidery.”

Trend #4: NYC Seventies

There’s a new spin on the Seventies this season, centred around retro separates and textured fabrics. Far sleeker than the past few seasons boho take on the decade, this trend includes lots of tailoring and lady like pieces mixed in with cool faux fur styles. Vinyl, plaid and corduroy are all key fabrics and the colour palette is made up of shades of tobacco, camel, burgundy and mustard.

Fashion team’s top tip: “Get the look by wearing a vinyl mac over checked trousers, or pair a printed silk shirt with a chunky cord suit.  Opt for boots and gold jewellery to finish your look.”

Trend #5: Midnight Magpie

This is the most glamorous look for the new season. Designers embraced high sparkle and shine as silver, gold and bronze pieces shimmered down the catwalks – from dresses, to ankle socks to slouch boots. But the crucial thing marking out this trend as something new, was the designers use of subtle colour to create a point of difference to the usual metallic trend.

Fashion team’s top tip: “Use a jumpsuit as the modern way to nail one step dressing – just add heels..  Blush pink sequins make a chic change to the little black dress or why not be bold and opt for a tailored skirt suit in all over silver sequins – keep it rocky with the addition of studded boots.”
