3 simple tips to upgrade your holiday

After several bad hotel experiences, Tamara Heber-Percy was inspired to set up the first incarnation of Mr & Mrs Smith in 2002, producing a glossy guidebook to the new style of boutique hotels that are now all over the UK. Since then, Tamara and her partner have evolved their business into a global travel club with a million like-minded members in more than 100 countries. Tamara joins us on Saturday 11 November, sharing her travel tricks to turn economy into first class and basic doubles into a suite with a view…

Ahead of Stylist Live, she shares three simple steps anyone can take to improve their holiday.

1. Be honest about what you want or even need from your trip.

Is it purely to relax, for adventure, about culture…or a combination of them all. Define what you want from your holiday before thinking about the location.  Time away from our day-to-day busy and stressful lives is such a luxury and getting it wrong is just so deeply disappointing!

2. Spontaneity is all in the planning…

Some form of organisation is always helpful on holiday. Book several restaurants so that you have options to choose from and nothing is a huge decision whilst you’re away, say it’s a special occasion and ask for the best table… All these little details can make a trip really special. Whilst it’s key to maintain a level of planning, do also give yourself the flexibility to be spontaneous, holidays are about discovering cultures and exploring places so if you want to spend the afternoon whiling away the hours seeing something new, you can – don’t be too stringent with a schedule.

3. Research!

Sounds like a no brainer, but do your research on the best time of year to visit where you want to go – you don’t want to be caught out mid rainy season.  If you’re after a kids-free zone, check your trip doesn’t fall on a school holiday be that summer or half term.  If you’re on a budget, consider flying on a Tuesday or an evening past 6pm, flights tend to be considerably cheaper.
